Is integration of Apache with Tomcat really worth?

January 8th, 2011 Comments off

As Apache and Tomcat have high importance in web server hosting industry. There are both good and bad side this integration of Apache with Tomcat and there are different opinion about the same. Following are some points I would like to attach the discussion.

Clustering – When Apache is used as front-end it works as a front door for multiple Tomcat instances. Apache has the ability to ignore if any one of Tomcats fails. For this you need to use a hardware which is load-balanced.

Security – I we compared Apache with Java then we can know that Java has its own security manages and Apache works on bigger mid-share. Though this is a controversial topic but when one prefer to go fo Apache he needs to secure two systems at the same time but which can be appreciated by search engines also.

Clustering / Security – It is possible to use Apache with multiple tomcats for multiple URL name-spaces and in such situations Tomcats can be more protected individually. Though Apache is smarter proxy server one need to take care of it.

Add-Ons – In Apache one can add PHP, CGI and pearl very smoothly and such addition is very effective for Tomcat. Unlike Tomcat, Apache has many modules to be plugged in.

Dcorators - It possible to perform multiple decorators when Apache is in front of Tomcat which does not support of quick code.

Speed – Though it is very hard to compare speed between Apache and Tomcat, when things come to static content, Apache is quicker than Tomcat. But this only applicable in the case of high traffic websites. There are some exceptions where Tomcat wins the race by using connector wisely.

Socket Handling – In many cases Apache it known as better socket handler than the Tomcat. Tomcat handles the sockets through JVM which require to go through platform, hence makes Tomcat slower.

Reasons why the VPS Server Hosting should be preferred?

September 4th, 2009 No comments

There is always a confusion in the web site owners, Which Hosting option to choose? . Though the best Dedicated Server hosting is considered as best, VPS hosting has a number of similar advantageous and it can satisfy the clients needs.vps_2 Reasons why the VPS Server Hosting should be preferred?

VPS: Virtual private Server, it a technique where the physical server is partitioned into number of virtual servers. One server acts as several Virtual servers. This Virtual servers are fully provided with dedicated resources to work as a dedicated server itself. Each server can have its own copy of operating system.

VPS hosting solution is best suited for the small businesses and It has several advantages over the right choice of users. It provides full features with lower cost than Dedicated hosting. People generally want to buy a Dedicated server, however the Cost of the Server us too high to cope with, and the requirements of the clients are high. VPS hosting is the Best answer for all this.

VPS is loved by the people due to its ability to work independently even though it is on the same physical server. Each server is loaded with unique resources and it acts as dedicated server to the client. It means that there is no competition for the resources and it can handle high volume of traffic. The main thing this Virtual servers are isolated from each other.

This allows a complete freedom for every VPS owner, Virus attack on the One VPS is not affected on another, as on the Shared server hosting. Shared server hosting is also affected by the number of websites it is hosting and they share the resources, which makes the system slow. The server can anytime go down. Traffic on one shared hosting client can affect other client on the Shared hosting.

After reading all this you might have figured it out that the best hosting solution is the VPS hosting, what ever you consider Price, reliability, security, it offers the best.

The business which are large for the shared hosting and cannot afford Dedicated server hosting can blindly opt for the VPS hosting. VPS hosting solutions has grabbed the market of dedicated hosting in some percent. Many VPS hosting companies offer great service to the clients with 24×7 support.

What is Firewall?

July 21st, 2009 No comments

A firewall is software written for the purpose of securing your computer from the threats like hacking, Viruses and worms that try to enter your system from the network. Using firewall is the first step to make your system secured. It is the device or set of devices which is configured to either permit or deny , encrypt and decrypt the traffic  between the domain in regards to the security rules set.

Please always turn ON your firewall before connecting to the internet.

A Firewall can be software, hardware or combination of both.

There are several types of firewall techniques:

1.       Packet filter Firewall: In this firewall, each packet coming to or leaving the network is monitored and decision is taken whether to accept or deny based on the rules set. This technique is very effective and well appreciated, however it is somewhat difficult to configure.

2.       Stateful firewall: This firewall is similar to packet filter firewall, however it is more intelligent in tracking the connections which are active. Configuring rues is easy and in deeper way.

3.       Application Gateway Firewall:  This technique is useful in some applications such as Telnet servers and FTP Servers. This firewall can bring performance degradation to the network.

4.       Circuit Level Gateway: This firewall is activated only when TCP or UDP connection is made. Once the connection is established the packets can traverse in the network without further filtering process.

5.       Proxy server: This is widely used in an enterprise. It checks each an every packet in the network. The proxy server also hides the network address

Basic way the Firewall is configured.

A firewall can be configured in either of the two basic ways given below.

Default Deny: The firewall lists the network services that are allowed and every thing else is denied.

Default Allow: The Firewall lists the network services which are not allowed and every thing else is allowed.

Need of firewall:

If the computer is not secured with the firewall and connected to the internet. The hackers can easily gain access to your system and exploit with your system The intruder can install code on your system that destroys files or may do some malfunctioning. This is firewall helps you out, It screen outs many kind of malicious traffic before it reaches the system.

Only firewall doesn’t make your system completely secure. This is base line securing your system. You should install additional security measures. Antivirus software is a good for your system

Google Chrome Operating System

July 11th, 2009 No comments

After the great success of the Google chrome browser, Google is now spreading wings to the master software i.e Operating system named after the browser itself as Google chrome OS. Stats show that over 30 million people use Chrome browser every day. The concept behind developing such kind of operating system is that, OS were designed when Internet(Web) was not there. So this operating system would be thinking in the context of web.

Some of the features disclosed yet.

Google chrome OS is an Open source operating system that will be initially targeted towards Net books. It is lightweight too. In the second half of the 2010 the operating system will be available with its code with net books.

Speed, security and simplicity will be the key aspects of the operating system. Now the operating itself will be a fast software as well as lightweight. This will help in few seconds boot up and get you on the web.

Users would love the OS when they hear that the operating system has a great security architecture will itself deal with the malwares, Viruses and security updates.

Google OS will run on ARM chips and x86 as well. The software of the OS is also simple. All web based application will automatically work and the new applications can be written using any liked technologies. This application would infact work on all the operating system such as Windows, Mac and Linux.

Google is also looking to develop a cloud computing with web based Chrome OS, which will eliminate the need for local data and local software.

Google has thought of all the problems of the end users as well. Many problems arise while using OS in day to day life such as, users need to get email instantly without waiting for the System to boot up and browsers to start up.

All of them just hope that the system should be as fast as it was new, data backup is also a  worry of the users. What harasses the users is configuring the computer to work with every software, script or utility, this takes a lots of time and hardly succeed. This operating system will make the people happy who like to spend more time on internet

Tunneling.

Tunneling Overview!

Tunneling is the basis of VPN .  Almost all the VPN works on the method called tunneling.Tunneling is the method of used to transfer data from one network over another network in Network Infrastructure. The data to be transferred can be in frames of another protocol.

Tunneling encapsulates the data send by the sending node on its format i.e it adds its header, which contains routing information so that the data is traveresd in the network properly. The encapsulated packets are routed through the endpoint of the tunnel over the network. Tunnel is the logical path through which the packets encapsulated are traversed to reach the destination. when the frames reaches the destination the packet is de-encapsulated and the frames are forwarded to the final destination.

In short tunneling is the process of outlined below

Frames ——> Encapsulation ——> Transmission ——>  De-encapsulation ——> Destination
Tunneling

Protocols used by tunneling.

Tunneling uses one type of protocol to encapsulate the frames from the datagram of protocol. VPN uses PPTP protocol to encapsulate the frame over the internet(public network). Alternative  protocol which can be used is L2TP. This protocols depends upon the features specified by the PPP. PPP was the basic protocol used to send data across dedicated or dial-up connections. PPP encapsulates the IP packets with the PPP frames and transmits the data across the network. It was specifically designe to be used over NAS ( Network Access Server).

Tunneling requires three protocols.

Carrier - The protocol used by the network to tranfer the data.

Encapsulating protocol — the protocol to wrap the data.(PPTP,L2TP,GRE,IPSec)

Passenger protocol - protocol to carry the original data(IPX, Netbeui,IP).

What is split tunneling?

split tunneling is the method which enables the Remote access VPN CLIENTS to route the corporate traffic over the network(VPN connection),while sends the Internet based traffic using the local Internet connection. This is great method to split the traffic, use of corporate bandwidth for access to internet sitesis prevented.

This adds the extra security to the network. If the remote access client has the reachability to both Internet and private Organisation network simultaneously, there is the possiblity that the Internet connection can be exploited to access to private organisation network through the remote access client.

The companies which are more security sensitive can choose to use the default routing method which ensures that every traffic by the VPN client passes by the corporate firewall.
