PuTTY : A Great Utility To Establish A SSH Connection

January 18th, 2011 Comments off

One can describe PuTTy as a client program for the network protocols which are mostly used for running a remote sessions on a computer system which is connected to a network. Such programs include SSH, Rlogin network protocols and Telnet. This PuTTY obligates towards client side of a particular session and not on the server side where does it actually runs.

In other words one can say that PuTTY makes it possible to analize a operation on the computer system which can be different that the computer system where actually it is running. For example you can operate a computer system having any operating system, software etc from other computer which has different parameters.

PuTTY supports both xterm terminal as well as DECterm but PuTTY’s default terminal type to any server is as xterm if any problem persists with it then it can be reconfigured as vt220.

If anybody has a question that ‘Which commands can be executed in a PuTTY terminal window?’ then it is basically wrong question because no process occurs inside PuTTY but it only a tool of communication which forwards the commands typed by you to the another computer and responses from that computer back to you. PuTTY has nothing to do with running applications on any of the both computer systems ans so that command execution depends on the system’s execution compatibility to those commands.

By using PuTTY the security level of web servers can be maintained. It is very easy to run PuTTY by downloading ‘puttygen.exe‘ which is widely available on Internet.

SSL Explorer : SSL Explorer has two editions

SSL Explorer : Community Editionsite_logo-300x78 SSL Explorer: Community Edition

SSL Explorer : Enterprise Edition.

Let us see the community edition.

SSL Community edition : It is an Open source SSL VPN product which is developed by 3Sp Ltd. This solution is licensed under GNU General Public License (GPL). Primarily this solution is aimed at the smaller business that requires remote access to the internal networks resources.

Its design is gives it an added advantage. It is designed to install upon a standalone server and it allows to interconnect remotely to an internal network resource such as intranet websites, file sharing, applications such as Fat Client and it also supports other data supports such as regular web browsers. The end user is benefited in the way of use and easy access to the resources they need daily. The resources needed daily can be accesses through the web browser without installing dedicated VPN Client software.

Number of operating systems supports this Explorer;

Microsoft Windows 200, XP, Xp,x64,2003 & Vista

Almost all the main flavors of Linux : Red Hat Enterprise linux, Fedora Core, CentOS,        SUSE Linux, Debian, Gentoo.

Mac OS X v10.4 or later.

Sun Microsystems Solaris 8 and 9.

SSL Explorer is written in java programming language and it contains databases of its own and the web server is used to serve the secure web pages which allows to access the back-end network resources. Shortly if we say it acts as a web based proxy which is an intermediate between external users and it also provides the means to authenticate the users by identifying by the querying a number of user database including Microsoft’s Active Directory.

A special care is taken  for the resources that use the port forwarding to operate successfully. For this type of resources a lightweight Java applet is developed known as SSL-explorer Agent which is downloaded and launched by the client browser.

SSL is beneficial to all the potential users, however there are group of many users which are greatly benefited and kept in mind while designing the browser.

Road warriors - The users who spend lot of time in traveling and need to connect to the office computer from number of different computers.

Technical support staff: In most of the corporations technical support is located at OFF site.

University Students: These students are also roaming and need to connect from the different locations.

Telecommuters: Exclusively these people work from the home and need the dedicated remote facility.

Technologies that is used by the SSL-Explorer:

rPath Linux - provides appliance platform for SSL Explorer virtualized appliance.]

Apache Struts - MVC framework for web development

Jetty 5.0 - Java based web server and servlet container.

HSQLDB-Lightweight java database for storing configures data and internal database.

AJAX Tags- For responsive web interface.

Common tags- used for Virtual file system implementation.

Log4j-Logging component of SL

Rome-RSS feed readers.

JCIFS-  For SMB protocol support for windows networking.

BEA systems jRockit- High performance SSL- Explorer installations.

Virtual Private Network :

July 6th, 2009 No comments

VPN is a network is a network which is formed using public wires to connect nodes i.e we can say that itis private network which makes use of public newtork, which allows you to secure your network through security and encryption policies.
It provides additional security to the network and also remote access into the enterprise.VPN is boon for the network professional and the enterprneurs. It gives the business the alternative to an expensive dedicated private connection from one office to another. many of them uses

VPN on their serves to allow employees to remotely login to the server.VPN adds an advantage to the the existing network which is File sharing, Video conferencing and many more similar network services. It doesn’t allow any new functionality that is offered by the alternative network mechanisms, however you can get these services offered in more configured , secured andefficiently managed and the most important is VPN is Cheap in most of the cases.

VPN uses the method called as tunneling , it uses the same hardware as the exsisting network (Internet/Intranet).

VP suports at least 3 modes of use:

Remote access
LAN to LAN Internetworking
Controlled access in Intranet.

Pros and cons of Virtual private network:

Pros:
VPN is one of the network solution which establish Long- distance secured connections, particularly for wireless local area networking.

VPN is cost effective: It saves the money for the organisations in many aspects .It eliminates the need for Long distance Leased lines. - Many organization uses T1 lines traditionaly to office locations, VPN allows you to use the publivc network infrastructure including internet to make theseconnections and make it a private virtual network thorugh a chepaer local leased lines or may be by using Broadband connections from the nearer ISP.

Reduces long distance telephone charges: A VPN replaces the remote servers and long distance connections used commonly. Here, the client needs to connect nearer ISP which is at the low cost ascompared to the previosly used method.
Reducing support costs: It reduce the cost for the organization to maintain the network. The organisation can hire a third party servie providers.
Scalabitlity: The cost of scaling up the netwotk in the dedicated Network is much more higher as compared to the VPN.

Using VPN is also vey easy if you have the appropriate networking software and hardware support..

VPN have some Limitations too:

Although it seems to be a perfect network infrastructure there exists some limitations to it.

1. It needs a complete understanding of the security issues with the carefull installation to ensure the intended security on the public network as internet.

2. When using the internet bases VPN the performance and the reliablity is ot in the hands of theOrganization.
